Privacy Policy

GuardAngel ("we," "our," or "the app") is a family safety and personal safety application. This policy describes how we collect, use, store, and protect your information. By using GuardAngel, you agree to the practices described below.

1. Information We Collect

Account information. When you register, we collect your name, email address, and password. If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive the name and email associated with that account.

Location data. GuardAngel collects real-time location data in the foreground and background to enable family tracking, safe zone alerts, and personal safety features. Location history is retained for a period determined by your subscription tier (24 hours to 90 days) and then automatically deleted.

Profile photos. Parents and children may upload profile photos, which are stored securely and visible only to members of the same family group.

Face geometry. If you use the face enrollment feature, GuardAngel uses on-device machine learning (Google ML Kit) to analyze facial geometry from camera input. Face feature data is used solely for matching purposes within the missing child community feature. Raw images are not stored; only computed feature vectors are retained.

Audio recordings. When an SOS alert is triggered, GuardAngel may record up to 5 minutes of audio to provide context to family members and emergency contacts. Recordings are stored securely and accessible only to authorized family members.

Device notifications. On Android, if content monitoring is enabled by a parent, GuardAngel reads notification content from other apps to detect potentially harmful keywords. This data is processed on-device and only flagged alerts are transmitted to the parent. Full notification content is not stored on our servers.

Contacts. If you add emergency contacts, we store the names and phone numbers you provide. We do not access your device's full contact list.

Subscription data. We record your subscription tier and purchase status to determine which features are available to you. Payment processing is handled entirely by Apple (App Store) or Google (Play Store). We do not collect or store credit card numbers, bank details, or other payment instruments.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use collected information to:

Provide real-time location sharing between family members
Send SOS alerts, push notifications, and SMS messages to designated contacts
Power safe zone entry and exit notifications
Enable community safety features such as missing child alerts and sighting reports
Facilitate content monitoring alerts for parents (Android only)
Manage your subscription and feature access
Improve app stability and performance through crash reporting

3. Children's Privacy (COPPA Compliance)

GuardAngel is designed for families, including children under 13. We comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and applicable child privacy laws.

Child accounts are created exclusively by a parent or legal guardian. A child cannot create an account independently. The parent provides the child's name and manages all privacy settings for the child's account.

Data collected from child accounts is limited to what is necessary for the app's safety features: location, profile name, and (optionally) profile photo. This data is shared only with the parent, co-parents, and guardians who are members of the same family group.

Parents may review, modify, or delete their child's data at any time through the app. Parents may also delete the child's account entirely, which removes all associated data from our systems.

We do not serve advertising to children. We do not sell, rent, or share children's personal information with third parties for marketing or advertising purposes.

4. Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored on Google Firebase infrastructure, which encrypts data at rest and in transit using industry-standard protocols. Profile photos and audio recordings are stored in Firebase Cloud Storage. Structured data (locations, alerts, family relationships) is stored in Cloud Firestore.

We implement security rules that restrict data access based on family membership and user role. A user can only access data belonging to their own family group. Community features (missing child alerts, safety reports) are accessible to all authenticated users by design.

While we implement reasonable security measures, no system is completely secure. We encourage users to protect their account credentials and to contact us if they suspect unauthorized access.

5. Third-Party Services

GuardAngel uses the following third-party services, each governed by their own privacy policies:

Google Firebase (Authentication, Cloud Firestore, Cloud Storage, Cloud Functions, Cloud Messaging, Crashlytics, Analytics) — for app infrastructure, data storage, push notifications, and crash reporting
Mapbox — for map rendering, location display, and point-of-interest search
Vonage — for delivering SOS SMS messages to emergency contacts
RevenueCat — for subscription management and purchase validation
Google ML Kit — for on-device face detection (face data does not leave the device)
Apple / Google — for in-app purchase processing (payment details are handled entirely by the respective platform)

We do not sell your personal information to any third party. Data shared with the services listed above is limited to what is necessary for their respective functions.

6. SMS Communications

When an SOS alert is triggered, GuardAngel sends SMS messages to designated emergency contacts via Vonage. These messages contain the user's name and current location. The volume of SMS messages is determined by your subscription tier. SOS SMS functionality is available on all tiers, including the free tier.

7. Location Data and Background Access

GuardAngel requests background location access to enable continuous family tracking and safe zone monitoring. You may revoke location permissions at any time through your device's settings. Revoking location access will disable real-time tracking and safe zone alerts but will not affect other app functionality.

Location data is retained according to your subscription tier. After the retention period, location history is automatically deleted. You may also manually delete your location history through the app.

8. Data Retention and Deletion

You may delete your account at any time from the Settings screen within the app. When you delete your account, all personal data associated with your account is permanently removed from our systems, including location history, profile information, alert records, and audio recordings.

If a parent deletes a child's account, all data associated with that child is also permanently removed.

Certain anonymized, aggregated data (such as crash reports) may be retained for service improvement purposes, but this data cannot be used to identify any individual.

9. Your Rights

You have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data at any time. Parents have these same rights with respect to their children's data. To exercise these rights, use the account management features within the app or contact us at the address below.

If you are a resident of California, the European Union, or another jurisdiction with specific data privacy laws, you may have additional rights under those laws. We honor all applicable data subject rights requests.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify you through the app or by other appropriate means. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects when the policy was most recently revised. Continued use of GuardAngel after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
